I find the idea that one should know more about one’s state of mind to be a bit frightening.
What we’re talking about is a condition called “dissociative identity disorder.” Dissociative identity disorder is a condition where someone who was once very clear in their identity but has a memory loss experiences a split identity. One that is more detached from the people around him, where he can act and think on his own terms. It’s not all that common, but it’s a real condition.
Dissociative identity disorder is the most common type of mental illness. It causes you to believe you are someone else, or that you have someone else’s perspective on a certain thing. Because of this, you can’t understand or explain what you are experiencing, and because you’ve forgotten your own identity, your thoughts feel strange and foreign. It’s often confused with schizophrenia, but it isn’t.
